What do we mean by “probiotics” in reef aquariums?
In reef aquariums, probiotics refer to a range of live marine microorganisms that are beneficial for the tank’s balance and ecosystem. By helping develop optimal biological filtration, probiotics transform organic matter and compounds into biomass—ideal for microphagous filter feeders and macrofauna. Probiotics also greatly reduce organic sediments in the sand and live rock, strengthening the tank’s various bacterial substrates.
Probiotics Symbio® : An innovative product, backed by rigorous R&D
Probiotics Symbio® is the newest product in the Atelier Récifal range. Developed in partnership with a French laboratory specializing in bacteriology and live microorganisms for 40 years, Probiotics Symbio® required two years of research and development to fully meet our standards and our customers’ expectations. Made up of live microorganisms combined with 3 probiotic marine bacterial strains, specially selected for their ability to develop optimal biological filtration and to convert organic matter into biomass (before it turns into nitrates and phosphates), Probiotics Symbio® is an innovative product characterized by maximum effectiveness and ease of use. Used during your seawater changes, it helps develop a healthy, balanced ecosystem—ideal for corals and all the marine life in your reef aquarium.

What are the benefits of Probiotics Symbio®?
- Develops optimal biological filtration. Probiotics Symbio® contains a range of marine microorganisms combined with 3 live probiotic bacterial strains, helping develop optimal biological filtration in your reef aquarium. By promoting the growth of micro/macrofauna and making the water crystal clear, biological filtration helps create balance and a healthy ecosystem in your tank.
- Converts nitrates and phosphates into biomass. The combination of the 3 probiotic bacterial strains used helps convert organic matter and compounds into biomass before they turn into nitrates and phosphates. Ideal for microphagous filter feeders such as sponges, the biomass will also promote the development of rich, diverse macrofauna.
- Boosts the vitality of fish and invertebrates. By increasing antibody production and supporting osmoregulation (fish’s ability to regulate internal fluids), Probiotics Symbio® strengthens the vitality and immune system of all the fish and invertebrates in your reef aquarium, helping intensify their colors.
- Helps prevent and control algae growth. Thanks to the biological filtration it produces, Probiotics Symbio® effectively helps prevent the appearance and development of unwanted algae in your reef aquarium. By depriving algae of organic matter and nitrates/phosphates, Probiotics Symbio® removes two of their main nutrient sources, essential for their proliferation.
- Reduces sediments in the tank. The live probiotic bacteria and marine microorganisms used in Probiotics Symbio® help break down sediments and polluting organic compounds found on live rock and in the sand into biomass. Once converted, the sediments give way to a true bacterial substrate that benefits the tank.
